Two men arrested for death of co-worker who was mistakenly cooked in an industrial oven Bumble Bee Foods and two managers were charged by Los Angeles prosecutors yesterday with violating safety regulations in the death of a worker who was cooked in an industrial oven with tons of tuna.   Jose Melena was performing maintenance in a 35-foot-long oven at the company’s Santa Fe Springs plant before dawn Oct. 11, 2012, when a co-worker, who mistakenly believed Melena was in the bathroom, filled the pressure cooker with 12,000 pounds of canned tuna and it was turned on. When a supervisor noticed Melena, 62, was missing, an announcement was made on the intercom and employees searched for him in the facility and parking lot, according to a report by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. Market capitalisation falls by N88bn Trading floor, Nigerian Stock Exchange The equities segment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange opened the week on a negative note as equities failed to rally after declining on Thursday and Friday. At the close of trading, the market capitalisation of the listed equities fell by N88bn or 0.75 per cent to close at N11.663tn, down from N11.751tn. Also, the NSE All-Share Index depreciated by 168 basis points or 0.49 per cent from 34,485.72 basis points to 34,317.72 basis points. Monday’s losses were broadly spread as all market indicators fell, with the exception of the NSE Industrial Index, which rose from 2,123.83 basis points to 2,129.94 basis points, and the NSE Alternative Securities Market Index, which closed unchanged. Investors exchanged 200.966 million shares valued at N2.197bn in 4,151 deals on Monday with 19 stocks recording price appreciation and 27 others recording price depreciation. Banks use female marketers to woo senators, Reps-elect National Assembly building, Abuja Commercial banks have sent marketers, mostly females after newly-elected senators and members of the House of Representatives in Abuja to open discussions on investments and other business deals. The energetic, sweet-talking and mostly female marketers, flooded the International Conference Centre, venue of an ongoing induction course for the new arrivals on Monday. Investigations by The PUNCH showed that the target of the banks largely was to woo the lawmakers to open accounts with them. Collapsed bridge: Contractor must compensate victims, says Kwankwaso | credits: Shaheed The Kano State Police Command said that it had started investigation into the cause of the collapsed bridge that killed seven persons in Kano on Sunday. Also, the state Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the government would force the contractor handling the project to pay for the medical bills of the injured victims. The contractor, the governor added, would also be forced to pay compensation to families of those who died in the incident. Kidnappers free Ogun schoolgirl abducted in Lagos Precious | credits: File photo Precious Nwaigwe, the 15-year-old girl kidnapped in the Ajah area of Lagos State, while on her way to school in Ogun State, has been returned to Lagos about a year after her abduction. She was said to have been dropped off in the Obalende area of Lagos State on Friday. No excuse for failure, Chukwu tells Keshi Stephen Keshi A former coach of the Super Eagles, Christian Chukwu, has urged the returnee coach of the national team, Stephen Keshi, to give his best. Chukwu told The PUNCH that Keshi and his team have no excuse for failure in the qualifiers for the Rwanda 2016 African Nations Championship and the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Keshi signed a two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation last week to continue as the Eagles’ coach, ending months of controversy which followed the expiration of his previous contract that ended in July 2014. Van Gaal Says David de Gea Has Been Offered ‘A Lot Of Money’ To Stay At Manchester United Manchester United boss, Louis van Gaal says the club has offered  David de Gea “a lot of money” in a bid to keep the goalkeeper at Old Trafford. The goalkeeper who is in the  running for the PFA Player of the Year award after an impressive season has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. All You Need To Know About The Supplementary Elections in Abia, Imo, Taraba The April 11 governorship elections in Abia, Imo and Taraba states were  declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Today, INEC is holding supplementary elections in areas in those states where elections either did not take place or results were cancelled due to irregularities. The supplementary elections will hold in 51 Registration Areas (RAs) in nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Abia State; 79 RAs in 23 LGAs in Imo; and 32 RAs in 10 LGAs in Taraba. Already, the electoral agency has deployed three National Commissioners to each of the states on supervisory duties. The National Commissioners will be assisted in each of the states by three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
